What is sophrology?
Sophrology by definition is the study of consciousness in harmony. In practice, it is a unique method combining in a structured way, physical and mental techniques with the aim of producing an alert mind in a relaxed body.
It uses techniques such as deep breathing exercises, easy movement postures and visualisations to create an alert mind and relaxed body.
Sessions can be completed on a 1:1 or group basis. 1: 1 sessions are tailored made to suit the needs and/or deal with a specific issue facing the person.
Who created sophrology?
Sophrology was created by a neuro psychiatrist by the name of Professor Caycedo in 1960. He wanted to create an alternative treatment for his patients who were experiencing depression and/or have been traumatised in some way but were undergoing traditional drug and psychiatric treatments.
He explored and became interested in clinical hypnosis, phenomenology and western relaxation techniques such as Jacobson’s progressive relaxation and Schulz’s autogenic training. He was also inspired by eastern techniques such as Tibetan Buddhist meditation, Japanese Zen and Yoga. Caycedo created Sophrology as he was inspired by western and eastern techniques but left out the philosophy and religious aspect of eastern and western approaches .
How does it work?
By relaxing the body, you relax the mind. A body scan is experienced by the person who focus’s on the body from head to toe. The person becomes aware of the different parts of the body as tension is released and relaxation is gained.
In order to work with different techniques, the mind needs to quieten down and a state of consciousness between being awake and asleep but alert, needs to be attained. The techniques used have a greater impact when the “mind chatter” is much less or not there at all. It allows the person to get in touch with the deeper, wiser intuitive mind.
What can Sophrology help with?
Sophrology can be used therapeutically for people that have anxiety, burnout, depression, addictions, pain and phobias. It can also be used to prepare for up and coming events such as exams, sports competition, stage performances or speaking in public. It can be used to deal with stress, managing emotions, weight problems, increasing energy levels, and/or building up self-confidence.
Sophrology can be practised with me on a 1:1 or group basis. For Sophrology to work at its best, the techniques need regular practise outside of the Sophrology session. You have to work at it in order to obtain the benefits.

- Needs/goals of what you want to work on can be met more quickly in the sessions
- Greater variety of techniques to be tried and explored

- Work on a generic theme within the sessions
- Way of getting to know what Sophrology is all about before considering working on a 1:1 basis

4 Week Course – Releasing Tensions to Sleep Better Part 1
You will learn effective tools to understand how your relationship with your body can positively or negatively impact your every day life. During each session we will do a “body scan”, easy moving postures and breathing techniques to release tension. Each session will be ending with a visualisation to bring in positive qualities or characteristics into the every day life.
You will be taking away with you a “toolbox” of different techniques to be able to use as and when needed for achieving wellness.
