Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for a wide range of medical conditions such as repetitive strain injury, back pain, neck pain, headaches, postural changes in pregnancy and arthritis pain.

How does Osteopathy work?

Osteopaths use their hands to employ a variety of techniques. These include gentle soft tissue stretching, joint articulation and if required a stronger manipulation. All are designed to improve the quality and range of movement of a joint and its surrounding area.

Osteopathy is based on the principles that your general wellbeing is dependent on the muscles, skeleton, ligaments and connective tissues all working correctly and functioning together. This makes osteopathy a holistic therapy as it is not just a treatment of your symptoms. Osteopathy evaluates how and why the symptoms have occurred, what affect they are having on the rest of the body and how best to prevent it from reoccurring in the future.

Because Osteopathy is patient focused, every treatment is adapted to suit your individual needs. This makes osteopathy a safe and natural approach to healthcare suitable for the whole family.

What happens in an Osteopathy session?

On your first visit you will be asked a series of questions relating to your whole health history. This helps the therapist to build a profile of your body by cataloguing any health issues such as illnesses, accidents, fractures, operations etc…

You will then be asked to undress so that the therapist can see the areas in question, but also to assess how the spine is moving as a whole. (It is useful to wear loose fitting clothing, but not essential) You will usually be asked to perform a simple series of movements while standing and to have them checked with you lying on the treatment table. Once an idea as to what has happened has been established, the therapist will discuss with you any findings and a proposed treatment plan.

Occasionally it may be helpful to contact your GP to obtain any extra medical information relating to tests/x-rays etc. Your permission will always be asked before contacting your GP.

You will be given a treatment and provided with ways to support the treatment in-between visits.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle, safe and effective for babies and children.  Very specific, skilled, light pressure is applied where necessary to assist the natural ability of the body to release stresses and tensions.

An osteopath uses observation, case history and highly skilled palpation to assess the infants whole body (not just their head!). By identifying where the tension patterns are the osteopath can use gentle techniques to release the tension and rebalance the body. For more information, please see the article Cranial osteopathy for infants.
