Swedish body massage is the original Western massage technique involving a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers using a variety of stroking, kneading, pressure and flowing movements over the body.
How does Swedish Massage work?
Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology as opposed to energy work that is more common in Asian-style massage and was pioneered by a Swedish physiologist, Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839) at the University of Stockholm.
The many different types of hand movements used throughout this massage are designed to relax and energize the body by stimulating circulation. Toxins are released from the muscles, the nervous system is stimulated and emotional and physical stress is reduced.
What happens in a session?
After a brief consultation, the therapist will usually leave the room to allow you to remove your clothing (except for your underpants) and make yourself comfortable on the massage couch, with a large towel to cover your body. During the massage, only the part of your body being massaged will be exposed at any time, the rest being draped with towels.
Swedish massage involves the use of a massage oil to allow free movement of the massage techniques and to nourish the skin. A full body massage usually treats the back, legs, abdomen, arms, chest and neck, although this can be adapted to suit your individual requirements or preferences. A combination of long strokes, kneading, rolling, rubbing, gliding, vibration, percussive and tapping movements, are used to provide a relaxing and energising experience.
