The Bowen Technique is a holistic treatment made up of a series of gentle rolling moves with frequent pauses between these moves to give the body time to benefit from each set. Bowen Therapy both balances and stimulates – the process of repair begins once the body is relaxed.
How does Bowen Therapy work?
The gentle moves that the Bowen Therapy practitioner performs over muscles, tendons, joints and connective tissue, allows the brain to send messages to the body to make the necessary adjustments.
Because it is an holistic therapy, practitioners treat the body as a whole, including any presenting conditions. As the body starts to unwind, historic patterns of compensation, which have often been built up over a lifetime, start to become clear and also unwind, starting to restore balance in the body.
What happens in a Bowen Technique session?
An initial session begins by filling in a consultation form with the practitioner to discuss the client’s individual symptoms and concerns. A variety of observation assessments are made to form baselines against which future progress can be measured. The session can be carried out through light clothing and can take place either on a massage coach or in a seated position at the client’s request. Each session will last up to an hour and at the start of each treatment the client’s feedback will be sought and progress checked against the baseline assessments which together, will guide the content of the next treatment.
An initial course of 3-4 sessions, each a week to 10 days apart are recommended at the start, following which the need for future treatments and their frequency can be reviewed. The healing effects of The Bowen Technique will continue to work for up to 7 days so it is recommended to avoid other hands on therapies for this period. Some clients’ regular book monthly appointments for ‘maintenance’!
