The Bowen Technique is a gentle, holistic treatment which assists in addressing initial presenting conditions, for example back pain, a stiff neck or physical restrictions, whilst promoting a re-balancing of the body as a whole and general relaxation.
What is the Bowen Technique and how does it work?
The technique is made up of a series of gentle rolling moves. The moves are made at key areas of the body where load-bearing and stress factors are at their greatest, and where key structures converge.
An important aspect of the technique are the pauses between each set of moves. These pauses give the body time to assess and integrate the information received from the moves and to start to make changes.
As the body starts to adjust and unwind, historic patterns of compensation, which have often been built up over a lifetime several years, can start to become clear and also unwind, helping to start the process of re-balancing the body.
What happens in a Bowen Therapy session?
An initial session begins by filling in a consultation form with the practitioner to discuss the client’s individual symptoms and concerns. A variety of observation assessments are made to form baselines against which future progress can be measured. This will often include taking information about the client’s daily living and work arrangements, hobbies and activities which are affected by or may have an effect on the presenting conditions. The treatment can be carried out through light clothing and can take place either on a massage coach or in a seated position if the client has mobility issues.
Each session will last up to an hour and at the start of each follow-up treatment the client’s feedback will be sought and progress checked against the baseline assessments which, together, will guide the content of the next treatment.
Whilst the body will often start the process of change during the first treatment, an initial course of 3-4 sessions, each a week to 10 days apart are recommended at the start, following which the need for future treatments and their frequency can be reviewed. Some clients regularly book monthly appointments for maintenance.
