For most of us a modern diet with sugar, hydrogenated fats and a high intake of dairy and wheat combined with not enough fruit and veg means that we’re consuming too many hard-to-digest foods and not enough foods that aid digestion. The result is that we get blockages in our intestines. These blockages can stay in the gut for months or even years – even one harder to digest meal (for example cheese on toast) will generally cause a blockage in the gut that lasts 2-3 weeks if your diet is otherwise completely perfect. The reality is that most peoples diets are far from perfect so the blockages just keep building up. What you end up with is old debris coating the walls of the intestine that’s hard to shift and toxic. Your body can often end up absorbing some of these toxins and the colon wall can become damaged. This lowers your immunity, stresses your liver (which can cause skin problems, headaches and more), lowers your metabolism and encourages weight gain amongst other things.
So how does this impact my energy levels?
If your intestinal walls are coated with old, rancid food then it’s very difficult for them to absorb all the required nutrients from your food. Usually some will get through but for many people the amount of nutrients they are able to absorb are far from the optimum levels. If you can’t properly absorb enough of the right nutrients (such as the ones listed above) then your body simply won’t get what it needs to create enough energy for you. The same is true of focus and concentration as your brain hasn’t got the right nutrients to work at its best and sleep patterns are very often effected too – meaning you have even less energy! If you look at children and how much energy they have we should really all be able to achieve that, but as adults most of us are unable to because our bodies have had years of unbalanced diet to contend with. This leaves our digestion sluggish, slow and unable to absorb everything we need.
So what can I do about it?
