Meet the therapist: Mike Overend
We’re delighted to welcome Mike Overend to The Wellbeing Centre practitioner’s team. Mike offers a range of gentle therapies, including Bowen Therapy, Reiki and Angelic Reiki, which help to relieve pain, assist in addressing injuries, improve function and mobility, promote balance and healing, alleviate the effects of stress, and aid relaxation and sleep.
Hi Mike, could you start by telling us a bit more about yourself ?
I don’t really think I am well-qualified to do this, so I asked my clients to let me have their suggestions, one of whom replied as follows:
“Mike is a genuinely kind and compassionate healer. He is intuitive and sensitive – responding to individual needs as they change over time.
Mike is an honest and gentle therapist who make me feel at ease and relaxed during sessions”.
If you want something about me personally, then perhaps something about my two dogs, my interest in music (I play the piano and flute), and the fact that I like going to KD Gymnastics with my granddaughter and frequently get stuck in their foam pits after having jumped in!
What was your first experience of complementary therapy?
About ten years ago, I had been playing a lot of tennis and had developed problems in my left Achilles tendon. A friend recommended Bowen to me and, although sceptical at first, I decided to give it a go. After a few treatments, my swollen Achilles tendon had reduced and I felt that my whole body was balanced. As an additional and unexpected side-effect, I also noticed that I had a lot more energy and was feeling more positive about life in general!
What made you decide to become a therapist yourself?
Having had a career in the law for over twenty years I felt as though I had started to lose touch with my overall purpose, which was to help people. Learning the Bowen technique gave me the opportunity not only for personal development, but also to learn a new skill which could directly help people to improve the quality of their lives.
What are your top 3 tips for wellbeing?
- Meditate. This is a life-long process which helps us to discover and learn to love our inner, true selves, to take control of our minds and opens up a higher consciousness to us.
- Avoid negative or critical thoughts, both of ourselves and others. These thoughts are wasteful of our energy, block creative processes, affect our relationships with others, and can lead to mental and physical ill-health. Instead, develop and practice daily affirmations.
- Spend time in nature. Being in nature helps to ground and balance our energies. Better still, go for a walk in the countryside, so you’ll get the benefit of nature and exercise!
Who has been the biggest inspiration for you in your wellbeing journey?
My Reiki Master, Geoff Brooks, who attuned me to Reiki, opened up a world of new insights, experiences and possibilities and encouraged me to be creative.
What issues have you had most success in helping your clients with?
Most of my clients initially come to me for Bowen therapy, with presentations ranging from acute and chronic back ache, shoulder and neck restrictions, sciatica, general aches and pains, stress and tension, lack of energy, headaches, sinusitis and even hay fever. The beauty of the Bowen technique is that it not only helps in addressing the presenting conditions, but also starts to unwind the complex patterns of compensation which our bodies have developed over our lifetimes.
Once clients start to feel more balanced and in touch with their bodies, many like to move on to Reiki and Angelic Reiki to get in touch with their energies, and energy blocks, which may be contributing to their physical or emotional problems.
Can you share an example of a case study with amazing results?
How about using a client’s testimonial (they have agreed to it being used) as follows:
“My first experience of Bowen treatment was when I was feeling very run down and anxious. I had no idea what to expect from those first few treatments but was amazed how quickly I began to feel improvements in my general well-being.
Over the course of several treatments my sleeping patterns became more settled and I felt less anxious. The actual treatment was very gentle and relaxing with breaks in between each session – the identification of key areas that needed work was most beneficial and symptoms of a stiff neck and a sore shoulder were soon alleviated. Mike could often find something that was not quite as it should be and work on it before it became a problem.
It is always amazing to find my stomach start to growl after a few minutes and also a real tingling sensation up and down my spine and there is usually a feeling of energy being moved around my body. After some sessions I felt energised and refreshed but at other times I felt tearful and sometimes tired. Mike always explained to me what I could expect to feel which was very reassuring.
After several blocks of treatments I did feel so much more in tune with my body and much more able to relax. I have found that I can use some of the techniques I have learnt to help in every-day situations and I am aware of when I would benefit from a treatment. I would wholeheartedly recommend Bowen as a holistic treatment that has really worked for me.”
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I work with children of all ages, including those with special needs, and in particular autism. As a society, we seem to be placing greater stresses and expectations upon all of our children from a very early age, resulting in stress-related issues appearing in their behaviour. I have found that Bowen and Reiki can help them to relax and improve the quality of their lives.
