Sheila is a Chartered Physiotherapist with many years’ experience in the NHS, mainly working with people in pain. She has always been interested in the connection between the body and the mind.

She now offers both physiotherapy and mindfulness courses for stress, chronic pain and long-term health conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple-Sclerosis, Parkinsons, and Cancer.

I am an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist with extensive experience at senior level in the NHS locally. I am registered with the Health Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.

Over the 30+ years I’ve been practising as a Chartered Physiotherapist, most of my  patients have come to see me because they are in pain of some kind or another. This has usually been joint and muscle problems of some kind or other, whether caused by injury such as fractures or sprains or related to work, hobbies or posture, or possibly specific issues relating to pregnancy or the post-natal period.

I can offer help through a wide range of physiotherapy techniques to loosen tight joints or muscles and carefully chosen exercises which are designed to continue the benefits of physiotherapy long-term.

I’ve added to my training over the years with various specialised courses to gain extra skills and knowledge about how to help women through the pre/postnatal period plus how to relieve the scarring and tightness that often follows cancer treatment.

I first became interested in mindfulness at a course for physiotherapists, when I saw how much it helped someone with severe sciatic pain who had not been helped by other forms of treatment.

This prompted me to research mindfulness and led me to Breathworks, the organisation who developed Mindfulness-Based Pain Management.

At my first Mindfulness training course, I was really moved by the powerful stories of people whose lives had been transformed by mindfulness. I also found that there is a lot of research to support the use of mindfulness. I decided to train to become an accredited mindfulness teacher.

The mind can have a strong effect on the body and and on occasions it can even seem to work against the body.

For example, when we have a painful joint, our minds can make our muscles tense to prevent movement and protect the joint.  However, holding a joint still can make it stiff, and keeping muscles tense can make them ache.

So, some of the stiffness and pain can actually be due to the action of our mind, rather than the original injury to the joint.

I have trained in accordance with the UK Network for Mindfulness-Based Teachers Good Practice Guidelines and adhere to their strict standards.

I aim, by teaching high quality Mindfulness courses, to help people find more balance and really improve their quality of life.

As well as continuing to offer physiotherapy treatments, I run 3 specialised mindfulness courses, drop-in weekly mindful meditations and I also teach mindfulness on a one-to-one basis.

Mindfulness for Stress

This course can help if you are experiencing stress due to work, family, relationships, bereavement or other factors beyond your control. It can also help if you want to learn strategies to deal with the general complexity and pace of modern life.

Mindfulness for Pain Relief, Health and Wellbeing

Suitable if you suffer from fibromyalgia, arthritis or back pain. It can help if you have a long-term health condition like multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons or chronic fatigue syndrome/ME. It can also help those seeking chronic pain management.

Mindfulness for Cancer

This course is designed to help if you have a diagnosis of cancer. Generally, the best time to start to learn mindfulness is when you have completed your radical treatment ie surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

All 3 Mindfulness courses run over 8 weeks and cost £240 including materials (course workbook + set of 3-4 CDs/MP3 downloads).
