5 Benefits of Vinyasa Yoga
With Meltem offering a new Vinyasa Yoga class on Saturday mornings 10:30 – 11:45 at The Wellbeing Centre, we thought we’d talk about why we love Vinyasa Yoga and what the 5 top benefits of trying out this form of yoga are for you.
Vinyasa (pronounced “vin-yah-sah”) is a Sanskrit word for a phrase that roughly translates as “to place in a special way”. Vinyasa is a subset of Hatha Yoga that is distinguished by its fluid transitions and movement through a series of carefully planned poses whereas in the Hatha Yoga classes you are likely to focus more on individual postures.
Vinyasa, often referred to as Vinyasa Flow, is one of the most popular forms of yoga in the UK. It provides a balance of physical exertion with de-stressing mindfulness through the focus on the breathwork as you move through the different postures.
So what are the top 5 benefits of Vinyasa Yoga?
1. Strength & Balance
Though “Vinyasa Flow” might sound easy and relaxing, the continuous movement from posture to posture gives you quite the physical workout.
Whilst Meltem tailors the class and exercises for all levels from beginners to the more experienced in her classes, these sessions are designed to build up your strength and balance.
Flexibility is another benefit of this style of yoga due to the flow of movement from asana to asana and the types of postures taught.
As you move from posture to posture, you’ll be encouraged to link the movements to your breath. Breathing in during one movement and out on another. This helps you unwind in mind as well as body.
Your mind is more likely to remain focused as it concentrates on the breathwork, helping you to release any worries and be present in the moment which is a great way to de-stress even though you’re not exactly relaxing!
Vinyasa provides variety through continual movement and there is often great music playing throughout. It is easy to feel graceful as you practise moving between these postures and there is a certain rhythm to it all that makes it feel almost like a dance!
The classes at The Wellbeing Centre have a maximum attendance of 8 per class so it’s a great opportunity not only to get individual attention from your teacher but also to get to know the other like-minded students.
