Counselling & Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy enable people to develop self understanding and to make changes in their lives by exploring and resolving issues of a personal, interpersonal or intrapsychic nature.

Counselling and Psychotherapy may be able to help when you are suffering mental or emotional distress.  Such distress may result from things like:

  • Loss of employment
  • Divorce or loss of a relationship
  • Rape or assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Childhood abuse or bullying

Although Counselling and Psychotherapy overlap considerably, there are also recognised differences:

Counselling focuses primarily on specific problems, current life changes, and the fostering of clients’ wellbeing, by exploring difficulties and the strengths and strategies that clients have to overcome them. Humanistic Counselling in particular explores a person’s strengths and capabilities in areas such as creativity, personal growth and choice.

Psychotherapy addresses problems that are more deep-seated, complex or enduring. Habitual patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting formed in early life may give rise to problems later on when our circumstances are different: they become outmoded and no longer serve our best interests. Therapy is aimed at unveiling the origins of such patterns and restructuring the personality in a more beneficial way.

In both cases, the safe and trusting relationship between therapist and client is seen as the vehicle for healing change and transformation.

Transpersonal psychotherapy goes further still and is concerned not only with the ‘breakdown and repair’ of ordinary functioning but with our potential to grow beyond the ego to the heights and depths of the psyche. Drawing upon the wisdom of the world’s spiritual traditions alongside developments in modern psychology, transpersonal psychotherapy focuses on our deeper levels of experience, wisdom and understanding; our unique, individual creativity, and spiritual self-development.

Couples counselling (which can also be referred to as marriage guidance) is a form of therapy that looks to improve communication and resolve issues within an intimate relationship. Kamila Kaminska and Rachel Cooper both offer Couples Counselling at The Wellbeing Centre.
