Ayurveda is an ancient healing science that has its origin in Vedic culture. This healing system was most profoundly developed in India. Ayuh means life and veda means knowledge in Sanskrit.
The scope of knowledge in Ayurveda includes the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the individual and how these aspects interact with the environment. Healing occurs when imbalances in the body are restored to balance with a variety of therapies. Common therapies include, diet, lifestyle changes, herbal medications, massage and pancha karma (in-depth body purification techniques).
Ayurveda believes that each individual is unique. The make-up of each person’s constitution is derived from three basic energies, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These energies govern the body’s physiology as well as mental and emotional states. Disease occurs when these energies become imbalanced. The goal of an ayurvedic treatment is to identify the cause of the imbalance and then restore the balance using a variety of techniques based upon your constitution. Each treatment is individually tailored to your personal needs.
During the initial consultation the practitioner will complete a full medical history and physical exam through the prospective of Ayurveda. The exam will include looking at the eyes, pulse evaluation, and looking at the tongue. Also you will be asked to complete a detailed questionnaire, prior to arrive to your appointment, that evaluates your current dietary and lifestyle habits. The practitioner will review this information to establish the nature of your disorder and your constitution. Based upon this evaluation diet and lifestyle recommendations will be made. In addition the practitioner may recommend simple herbs* to assist in rebalancing the body.
