I run a low-cost, community acupuncture clinic at The Wellbeing Centre in Newbury. CAN (Community Acupuncture Newbury) offers affordable acupuncture treatments for a wide range of conditions in a multi-bed clinic. Costs are kept low by treating more than one patient at a time.
This is the first and only multi-bed acupuncture clinic in Berkshire and forms part of a worldwide movement with The Association of Community and Multibed Acupuncture Clinics (ACMAC) who aim to make acupuncture accessible to as many people as possible.
Multi-bed acupuncture is the usual way to receive acupuncture in the Far East. Acupuncture needles usually take 20-45 minutes to do their work, so the practitioner can place needles in one patient, leave them to relax into their treatment, and then move on to another patient.
However, Community Multi-bed Clinics are a relatively new development in the provision of acupuncture here in the West where it is more usual to see a practitioner on a one-to-one basis for 45 minutes to an hour per session. That may be fine for some people who can afford to use it whenever they need to. Many others can afford it once in a while but would find it hard to pay for the regular treatments that may be necessary. By offering treatments for around half the cost of a local ‘one-to-one’ treatment, regular treatments are more affordable to many more people enabling them to have treatments frequently enough and for long enough to really experience the benefits of this therapy; to get better and stay better.
But affordable acupuncture isn’t the only advantage of a Community Clinic, many people find that being treated alongside others gives them a greater sense of wellbeing due to the community spirit that emerges when several people are treated together. Research shows that patients being treated in multi-bed clinics report many positive experiences (Stone, 2006).
Additionally, many acupuncture practitioners report an increase in the healing power of the energy field is created when several people are treated together, just as practising yoga in a group class can make the energy seem to flow more easily and more powerfully.
“I think you do a great deal to maintain our privacy. You speak quietly and having the music playing helps. I’ve always been offered a private place to talk if needed. What I particularly like is the community side of it, sharing the healing environment.”
